The Mormon Church members were driven from New York, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. It took them four months to cross Iowa, due to severe weather and axle-deep mud. While crossing Iowa, the Mormons were begged to give assistance in the Mexican American War. Five hundred men gathered near Council Bluffs and marched to California. They left their loved ones on the plains and embarked on one of the longest military marches in American History. These men helped develop cities in the west, like San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. While the men were away, it was the women and children who migrated to Utah, using handcarts instead of wagons. 3,000 Mormons traveled across the country en masse in a highly organized fashion, making this a very unique migration.

Trail Rating/Description

Trail is 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in length and is rated 2.

City Streets, some hills. Many historical landmarks, historic and picturesque cemetery. Walk where Abraham Lincoln once walked! Child strollers are OK on this walk, but not suitable for wheelchairs.

Restrooms available at the Start/Finish and near the Dodge House (see your map). Refreshments may be purchased at Lansky's Restaurant - the menu is extensive and inexpensive. Other points along the trail also allow for food and drink purchase.

Abraham Lincoln

In August 1859 Abraham Lincoln traveled up what is Oakland Avenue on Council Bluffs to the overlook at the top. He met with Civil War General Grenville M. Dodge to survey the Missouri River valley. The Lincoln Monument commemorates Lincoln's visit to Council Bluffs. During his three day visit they (Lincoln and Dodge) decided that Council Bluffs was to be the eastern terminus of the nation's first transcontinental railroad. In 1911 the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) sponsored the monument's construction. It also includes two gas torches which burn continuously. Originally there were seven electric globes. These were replaced in 1963 with two gas torches.

Pets

Pets on leash are allowed except inside buildings. Service animals are welcome anywhere, of course. Please be prepared to meet the needs of your companion.
