He met with Civil War General Grenville M. Dodge to survey the Missouri River valley. The Lincoln Monument commemorates Lincoln's visit to Council Bluffs. During his three day visit they (Lincoln and Dodge) decided that Council Bluffs was to be the eastern terminus of the nation's first transcontinental railroad. In 1911 the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) sponsored the monument's construction. It also includes two gas torches which burn continuously. Originally there were seven electric globes. These were replaced in 1963 with two gas torches.
